What we found
- Hail is a yearly event. All 30 of the years from 1996 to 2025 had at least one day with hail of 1 inch or larger somewhere in the county. The busiest year was 1996, with hail on 19 days.
- Spring carries most of it. 59% of hail days fell in April, May or June, and May averages the most. Over 2016 to 2025, the county averaged 6.7 hail days a year and 4.5 with stones of 1 inch or more.
- Big stones are not rare. 55 days had hail of 1.75 inches (golf ball) or larger. Reports by size: under 1 inch, 384; 1 to 1.5 inches, 309; 1.75 to 2.5 inches, 119; 2.75 inches or larger, 12.
- Wind does its own damage. Thunderstorm or high wind damage was reported on 269 days (9 a year). The strongest gust in the records was 100 mph near West Tulsa on March 25, 2015. The county also logged 43 tornadoes in that time.
- 2026 so far: hail on 7 days (31 reports) through July 2026, the latest month in NOAA's published file, with stones up to 1.75 inches.
- Federal disasters: FEMA lists 27 disaster or emergency declarations that included Tulsa County since 1996, most recently DR-4721-OK (severe storms, straight-line winds, and tornadoes), declared July 19, 2023. Most hail storms never reach that level; they are handled through ordinary homeowner claims.

Homes by ZIP code
Housing age is a rough guide to roof history. A house built in the 1990s or 2000s is likely on its second roof by now; an older house may have more than one layer of shingles or decking that needs work.

Storm hit your street?
The records say how often hail falls here. Only an inspection says whether it damaged your roof. Tell us your ZIP and what you are seeing, and a local roofing contractor registered with the state calls you back.
Ask the pro whether the inspection is free, and ask for photos either way.
How we built this
Storms. NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database bulk detail files, 1996 to 2026, filtered to Oklahoma county zones for Tulsa County (and Wagoner, Rogers, Creek and Osage counties for the city table). We count hail reports, distinct dates with at least one report, and the largest reported size. Wind counts combine thunderstorm wind and high wind events. 1996 is the first year the database records all event types. The 2026 file runs through July 2026; NOAA publishes with a lag of a few months.
Disasters. OpenFEMA Disaster Declarations Summaries filtered to Tulsa County, one row per declaration.
Homes. US Census American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates by ZIP Code Tabulation Area and by place, via Census Reporter. City center points from the Census 2024 Gazetteer.
Limits. Storm reports depend on who was there to measure. A rural hail swath can go unreported while a storm over a busy part of town gets dozens of reports. Use this to understand the area, not to decide whether your roof was damaged. Only an inspection does that.
